"Can a 300 ton hydraulic press weld two pieces of metal together without heat?

Today we are testing cold welding with aluminum and copper. The idea is simple: clean the surfaces, press them together with insane force, break the oxide layer, and hopefully fresh metal touches fresh metal hard enough to become one solid piece.

At first it looks like it might actually work… but the hammer test tells the real story. Turns out the alloy matters a lot, and our aluminum and copper were not as cooperative as we hoped.

We’ll try this again later with better material!"
